The SPF Decoder
Most people apply only 1/4th of the required amount of sunscreen, getting only a fraction of the protection listed on the bottle. For Indian skin, we need protection against both UVB (Burn) and UVA (Aging).
What to look for on the label:
- SPF 50+: Protects against 98% of UVB rays found in our bright climate.
- PA++++ Rating: The highest level of protection against UVA rays (the "Silent Agers").
- Broad-Spectrum: Ensures the product blocks the entire UV spectrum.
- Physical vs Chemical: Physical (Zinc/Titanium) is best for sensitive skin; Chemical is great for a "No White Cast" finish.
Clinical Sunscreen Recommendations
Choose your protection based on your daily activity and skin type:
| Scenario | Recommended Type | Key Benefit |
|---|---|---|
| Oily / Outdoors | Silicone-based Matte gel | Sweat-proof & no oiliness |
| Indoor / Office | Lightweight lotion or serum | Protects against Blue Light from screens |
| Post-Treatment | 100% Mineral (Physical) | Ultra-safe for sensitized skin |
| On-the-go | Sunscreen Stick / Powder | Easy reapplication over makeup |
Dr. Manali's Advice
The "Two-Finger Rule" is essential. You need two full strips of sunscreen on your index and middle fingers to cover your face and neck adequately. If you use less, you aren't getting the SPF number on the bottle. Also, sunscreen "wears off" after 3-4 hours of exposure. If you're outdoors, you MUST reapply. My FAVORITE tip: Don't forget your ears and the back of your neck—these are the most common areas I see sun-induced skin cancers in.
