Dark circles are the number one cosmetic complaint I hear in my clinic. Almost every patient has tried dozens of expensive, over-the-counter eye creams with absolutely zero results. The reason these creams fail is that "dark circles" are not a single condition. The shadow under your eye could be caused by excess melanin pigment, sluggish vascular blood flow, very thin translucent skin, or a structural hollow (the "tear trough"). Until a Dermatologist diagnoses exactly *why* your under-eyes are dark, you cannot treat them effectively. We use clinical-grade peels, PRP, and targeted topicals to address the root cause.

The 3 Types of Dark Circles

To treat dark circles, we first have to classify them. Try gently stretching the skin under your eye: does the darkness spread out, or does it stay exactly the same?

1. Pigmented (True Melanin)

This is extremely common in Indian skin types. The body produces excess melanin specifically around the eyes (Periorbital Hyperpigmentation). If you stretch the skin, the dark color stays brown. This is often genetic, but heavily worsened by sun exposure, rubbing the eyes (allergies), and screen time.

2. Vascular (Blood Vessels)

The skin under the eye is the thinnest on the human body. If you are sleep-deprived, stressed, or have sinus congestion, the veins under the eyes dilate and pool with deoxygenated blood. Because the skin is so thin, this shows through as a blue, purple, or reddish shadow. If you stretch the skin, it often looks bluer.

3. Structural (Shadows)

Sometimes there is no extra pigment or blue veins at all. Instead, as we age (or due to genetics), we lose fat under the eye, creating a "hollow" or tear trough. Overhead lighting casts a shadow into this hollow, making it look like a dark circle.

Clinical Treatment Protocols

We do not use lasers for under-eye pigmentation in our clinic, as the skin is incredibly delicate and prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. Instead, we use a highly controlled combination of advanced chemical exfoliation, regenerative PRP, and medical topicals.

Treatment Method How It Works Best For
Under-Eye Arginine/Lactic Peels Very gentle, specifically formulated chemical peels designed for the delicate eye area. They safely exfoliate the top layer of trapped melanin without causing burns or peeling. Pigmented Dark Circles (Brownish).
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) We draw a small amount of your blood, isolate the growth factors, and inject them superficially under the eye. This stimulates intense collagen production, thickening the skin so the blue veins underneath no longer show through. Vascular Dark Circles (Blue/Purple) and fine wrinkles.
Prescription Topicals Medical-grade creams containing Kojic Acid, low-dose Retinoids, or Vitamin K. These are vastly superior to cosmetic creams and actually penetrate the dermis to block melanin production. Maintenance and ongoing prevention.
Doctor Advice

Dr. Manali's Advice

"If you have allergies (like allergic rhinitis) and constantly rub your eyes, you are causing 'frictional melanosis'. The friction triggers the skin to thicken and darken as a protective mechanism. No peel or cream will work if you continue to rub your eyes vigorously. Step one is always treating the underlying allergy and stopping the friction."

Frequently Asked Questions

Understanding under-eye treatments.

How many peel sessions are required?

Because we must use very gentle acids around the eye, it typically takes 4 to 6 sessions (spaced 2 weeks apart) to see a significant, visible reduction in the dark brown pigment.

Is under-eye PRP painful?

No, it is very well tolerated. We apply a strong numbing cream 45 minutes before the procedure, so you feel almost nothing. You may experience slight swelling for 24-48 hours afterward.

Can screen time cause dark circles?

Yes. Staring at screens causes eye strain, which dilates the blood vessels around the eyes (worsening the vascular blue shadow). Additionally, the blue light emitted from screens can stimulate melanin production over time.
