An ingrown toenail occurs when the sharp edge of the nail curves deeply into the surrounding skin fold, resulting in severe pain, redness, swelling, and chronic bacterial infection. It is a debilitating mechanical problem that requires minor surgical correction.

Nail Avulsion with Chemical Matrixectomy

Antibiotics alone will not cure an ingrown nail because the physical shard of nail is still stabbing the flesh. We perform a Partial Nail Avulsion under a pain-free digital nerve block. We remove only the offending edge, and then apply Phenol (a chemical) to the nail root to permanently prevent that specific edge from ever growing back.

Dr. Manali's Advice

Never let a pedicurist attempt to dig out an ingrown nail. They use unsterile tools and simply break the nail, leaving a jagged spike deep inside that will cause a massive infection a week later.

Ingrown Toenail FAQ

Clinical clarity on this common but serious condition.

Will my whole nail be removed?

No. We perform a 'partial' avulsion — only the 2-3mm of nail edge digging into the skin is removed. Your nail will look completely normal, just slightly narrower. This is combined with chemical matrixectomy to prevent recurrence.

Is the surgery painful?

The procedure is performed under a "digital nerve block" — the entire toe is numb. Most patients feel only mild pressure, not pain. See our minor procedures hub for all same-day clinical procedures.

What if I also have a fungal infection?

It is very common for ingrown nails to have concurrent fungal infections due to the chronic wound. Dr. Manali treats both conditions simultaneously for a complete and faster recovery.
