Why do nails take so long to heal?

The nail matrix (where the nail grows from) is deep under the skin, and nails grow slowly at ~1mm per month for toenails. You must wait for a completely new, healthy nail to grow out. Consistency with prescribed treatment is critical.

Is it dangerous to ignore nail infections?

Yes. Untreated fungal infections can spread to other nails and skin. Ignored paronychia can evolve into a deep tissue infection requiring emergency surgical drainage.

Can nail polish be used during treatment?

We advise against regular nail polish as it traps moisture and prevents anti-fungal medications from penetrating the nail. However, medicated anti-fungal nail lacquers can be part of your treatment plan for nail psoriasis.
