Why Are Your Lips Darkening?
The skin on your lips is uniquely thin and lacks the protective outer layer (stratum corneum) found on the rest of your body, making it incredibly susceptible to pigmentation.
1. Smoker's Melanosis
The heat from the cigarette, combined with the toxic chemicals in the smoke, directly stimulates the melanocytes in the lips. This typically causes a dark, brownish-black discoloration on the lower lip and the inner corners of the mouth.
2. Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Many patients are allergic to the fragrances, dyes, or preservatives in cheap lipsticks, lip balms, or even certain toothpastes. This chronic, low-grade allergic reaction causes inflammation, leading to severe Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH) on the lips.
3. Lip Licking & Friction
Saliva contains digestive enzymes. When you constantly lick your dry lips, these enzymes break down the delicate lip skin, causing inflammation and subsequent darkening. Habitually peeling or biting the lips has the exact same effect.

Clinical Clearing Protocols
We use a highly specific protocol to lift the excess pigment safely without burning the delicate lip tissue.
| Treatment Method | How It Works |
|---|---|
| Advanced Lip Peels | We use specialized, mild chemical peels (like Arginine, Lactic Acid, or very low-concentration TCA). These safely exfoliate the superficial layer of trapped melanin, revealing the lighter, pinker mucosa underneath over a few days. |
| Prescription Tyrosinase Inhibitors | Medical-grade creams containing Kojic Acid, Alpha Arbutin, or mild Hydroquinone. These are applied at home to stop the melanocytes from producing new pigment while the peels lift the old pigment. |
| Barrier Repair & Sun Protection | We will prescribe a medical-grade ceramide lip balm and an SPF 30+ lip protectant. You cannot clear lip pigmentation if you continue to let the sun and saliva damage the barrier. |
Dr. Manali's Advice
"Throw away your sugar scrubs and physical exfoliators immediately. Your lips do not have dead skin that needs to be scrubbed off like your feet do. If your lips are peeling, they are inflamed, not 'dead.' You must moisturize them constantly with plain white petroleum jelly (Vaseline) or a medical ceramide balm to let the inflammation subside before we can begin lightening treatments."
