Psoriasis doesn't just affect the skin; it frequently attacks the nail matrix. Nail psoriasis causes structural malformations resulting in deep pits, yellowish-brown 'oil spots' beneath the nail, extreme thickening, and the nail painfully lifting away from the bed (Onycholysis).

Targeted Immunomodulators

Nail psoriasis is notoriously resistant to standard treatments. It is an autoimmune response originating at the nail root. Because topical creams cannot penetrate deeply enough, we utilize intralesional corticosteroid injections directly into the nail matrix, accompanied by advanced systemic biologics or immunosuppressants for dramatic clearance.

Advanced Treatment Options

Dr. Manali's Advice

Nail psoriasis is heavily exacerbated by physical trauma. You must keep your nails trimmed ultra-short and wear gloves while doing manual work to prevent the Koebner phenomenon (trauma inducing new psoriasis lesions).

Nail Psoriasis FAQ

Understanding this challenging autoimmune nail condition.

Is it a fungal infection?

Nail psoriasis looks identical to nail fungus to the untrained eye. We rely on dermoscopy and KOH fungal scrapings to definitively diagnose the condition before initiating heavy therapies.

Can I cover it with nail polish to hide it?

Regular nail polish and acrylics can worsen nail psoriasis by trapping moisture and causing physical trauma. Instead, use a prescribed anti-fungal or medicated nail lacquer as part of your treatment plan. See our nail disorders hub.

If I have skin psoriasis, will I definitely get nail psoriasis?

Not necessarily. About 50% of patients with skin psoriasis also develop nail involvement. However, nail psoriasis can also appear in isolation even without any skin patches.
